Relationship Counselling for Multicultural Couples | Cross-Cultural Couples Therapy in London & Online

Every relationship brings together two unique people. In a multicultural or mixed-cultural relationship, you are also navigating different languages, family traditions, cultural values, communication styles, and expectations. These differences can be one of a relationship’s greatest strengths—but they can also become a source of misunderstanding, conflict, loneliness, or emotional distance.

At Wellbeing Rooms, I specialise in marriage counselling and couples therapy for multicultural, international, expatriate, and mixed-race couples. Whether you are dating, engaged, married, or navigating a long-term partnership, therapy provides a safe, confidential and culturally sensitive space where both partners can feel genuinely heard, understood and respected.

Therapy Informed by Both Professional Training and Lived Experience

Cross-cultural relationships are deeply personal to me—not only as a psychotherapist, but through my own life.

I have been in a multicultural, mixed-race marriage for more than 30 years and together we have raised two mixed-race children while building a life across different countries and cultures. I understand that the challenges are often far more nuanced than simply “cultural differences”. They can involve identity, belonging, language, extended family expectations, parenting, careers, immigration, and the question of where home truly is.

This lived experience allows me to appreciate many of the complexities that multicultural couples face without making assumptions about your relationship. Every couple’s story is unique, and my role is to help you understand each other more deeply rather than deciding whose perspective or culture is “right”.

Common Reasons Multicultural Couples Seek Marriage Counselling

Many couples come to therapy because they love one another but feel stuck in recurring patterns that neither partner fully understands.

You may be experiencing:

Frequent arguments or communication breakdowns
Different expectations around marriage, family or gender roles
Conflict with parents, in-laws or extended family
Parenting disagreements in bicultural or multilingual families
Religious or cultural differences affecting daily life
Trust issues, emotional distance or recovering from infidelity
Stress caused by relocation, immigration or expatriate life
Feeling misunderstood despite wanting the relationship to work
Balancing two cultures while maintaining a strong sense of identity
A Culturally Sensitive and Integrative Approach

Culture shapes how we communicate, express emotions, manage conflict, experience intimacy and understand commitment. Often, the conflict couples experience is not simply about culture itself, but about the deeper emotional meanings attached to those experiences.

My therapeutic approach is integrative, drawing upon humanistic, psychodynamic and existential psychotherapy. Together we explore not only what is happening between you, but why these patterns have developed, helping you build greater empathy, emotional safety and healthier ways of relating.

Rather than asking either partner to compromise their identity, therapy helps create a relationship where both cultures, experiences and perspectives can coexist with mutual respect.

Supporting International Professionals and Expat Couples

Many of my clients are international professionals, executives, entrepreneurs and expatriates living far from their country of origin. Relocating abroad can place enormous pressure on even the strongest relationships. Career demands, social isolation, cultural adjustment and being away from family support can all affect how couples connect with one another.

Therapy offers an opportunity to pause, reflect and reconnect before small misunderstandings become entrenched patterns.

Marriage Counselling in London and Online

I offer marriage counselling for multicultural and intercultural couples in London as well as online across the UK and internationally. Sessions are available in both English and Mandarin Chinese.

Whether you are preparing for marriage, navigating significant life changes, rebuilding trust after a difficult period, or simply wanting to strengthen your relationship, couples therapy can help you develop deeper understanding, healthier communication and a more resilient partnership.

Every multicultural relationship has its own story. My aim is to help you build a relationship where both partners feel seen, understood and able to flourish without either person having to leave part of themselves behind.
